Saratoga Is the Most Successful City in Upstate New York

Saratoga Springs has low taxes and good services because in our Commission form of government, elected Saratogians make decisions and are responsible for delivering services at a low cost.

Our government is strong, flexible and proven as capable during this year of epic worldwide challenges.

The Commission government is democratic, and our elected representatives are accessible to residents. We elect everyone who is making decisions on how to run our city’s government and they are knowledgeable because they actually manage a department rather than simply accept information fed to them.

Successful council members are reelected and the less successful are voted out at no cost to taxpayers. There is no cost to hire or fire these public servants who work for us.

Working together in the Commission form of government, our Mayor and 4 Commissioners have continued to improve Saratoga Springs since the last charter election:

No tax increase in 8 years

– Second lowest tax rate in New York State

More parking

– At no cost to the city, built the City Centre garage to generate more visitors to the city center, revenue for our local downtown businesses, and taxes for our government

Financially strong city

– Able to use reserves and borrow at very low rates during the national economic crisis

Excellent teamwork by entire city council

– Rebuilt and upgraded city hall after lightning strike
– Leased land for East Side Fire and EMT station
– Lead the city during a pandemic with excellent plans, multi-department teamwork, and communication

Green and healthy

– Completed Geyser Crest trail connecting to SPAC and downtown

Advanced planning

– City’s disaster plan allowed government to move to the Recreation Center that earlier city councils had designed to be a disaster center
– 6-year capital plan updated annually

Built 500 more affordable housing units

– Plans for 200 more have been submitted

And this is in just the past 3 years.
